National Bulk Foods Week October 12-18

September 17th, 2014 Posted in Products, Savings Tips, WholeSum Thoughts
Again this year, the Bulk is Green Council (BIG) is sponsoring National Bulk Foods Week to raise awareness about the environmental and economic benefits of buying foods from bulk bins. In 2013, more than 1,200 grocery stores and co-ops across the country joined BIG in celebrating National Bulk Foods Week.
BIG was founded in 2008 to highlight the advantages of bulk buying — which offers consumers the opportunity to save money, reduce food waste and decrease their carbon footprint through reduced packaging.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) say that roughly 30 to 40 percent of the food supply in the United States goes to waste. The EPA also reports that more food goes into landfills nationwide than any other single material — more than 34 million tons of food waste in 2010. Buying food in bulk, with the ability to buy the exact quantity needed, results in less food waste. National Bulk Foods Week encourages consumers to be conscious of the waste they produce and offers a ready path to more sustainable buying.
