Desk Plant Terrariums

July 6th, 2012 Posted in Crafts

This is a fun project you can do with the kids if you using cactus without thorns or seeds but can also be done with exotic cactus to make striking and helpful desk plants.   Plants shouldn’t be placed near computers due to liquid overflows.  As long as you are careful or remove the terrarium when watering, they can be a safer alternative to keeping a plant near your pc.  Remember to never hang a plant over a pc or monitor.  Overflow can permanently damage your equipment.

To make a terrarium, it is best to start with a layer of charcoal and rocks.  Then fill with dirt leaving ample space for your plants to increase in height.  Seeds like baby’s breath, basil, pansies, thyme, oregano and most other herbs grow well with little light.  Arrange plants first, then place in any seeds and water.  Add a terracotta worm to show moisture level.

Candle in a jif!

June 14th, 2012 Posted in Crafts

This project is quick and so easy your kids can do it.  All you need is an appropriate jar (small-medium… Jiff peanut butter jar works great), a tea candle, food coloring and decoupage glue.  Pour around 2 tblsp of glue into jar and add food coloring of your choice.  Mix well.  Close jar and shake/roll in in your hands  to distribute glue evenly over inside of jar.  Open and place upside-down on paper towel to dry and drain any excess glue.  Place candle inside and tada!  You can also use clear glue like Weldbond to add flower/scene cut outs to the outside of the jar. DO NOT ADD PAPER CUT OUTS INSIDE JAR NEAR FLAME!

Revolution Spring Wall Decorating Tips

May 24th, 2012 Posted in Crafts

Today on the Rev., Ty showed us how to spruce up a room with some simple wall art.  One idea is to use/buy small mason jars or test tubes and make a wire hanger to mount several on the wall.  Use them as rooting vases and flower vases to make different affects.

The second suggestion was to make an oval template and then a second one 1 in smaller.  Use chalk to outline the oval petals of your flower.  Paint in base color.  Add glaze to a qt of paint and paint where petals cross.  Using yellow paint and glaze, an a high heal shoe, paint the bottom of the shoe and use it like a stamp to create center pattern.  Touch up with brush!
