Evacuation hurricane tips

June 24th, 2014 Posted in Educational Forum, Money Saving Tips

hurricane-isabel.jpg.adapt.590.1Anything that can blow around should be taken inside such as lawn furniture. Before you leave shut off the power at the main breaker, also your main water line coming into your home. Make sure you take phone numbers or web addresses for any insurance that you have. Try to take at least three days supply of clothes and medicine. Don’t forget food and water for your family. Check ahead (like now) for shelters that take pets or for people with special needs. Planning ahead is the key to not standing around waiting for a hand out.

Money saving tips for hurricane prepardness.

hurricane-isabel.jpg.adapt.590.1If you save two liter soda bottles or just about any bottle that contained food (no milk jugs) they can be filled with water when a storm alert is issued (no need to buy water. ) Just about any canned food item can be eaten straight out of the can and speaking of cans don’t forget a manual can opener! If you use a fire to heat food, just wrap your pots with aluminum foil and they won’t get nasty soot all over them. Remember after a storm there will be plenty of tree limbs and other debris that you can use as fuel for your fire.

lemonsCorn starch is great in the kitchen but can also be used in place of powder. I put mine in an old spice jar with a sprinkle lid it is very refreshing. One website also claims it is great for helping loosen knots. Lemon juice is great in stead of salad dressing saves money and calories, but did you know it is also great for removing soap scum from shower doors. I keep my lemon juice in a spray bottle I bought at the dollar store spray the salad, spray the shower doors.

Money Saving Tip: Vinegar

June 5th, 2014 Posted in Savings Tips

This week’s money saving tip. Vinegar is a great all purpose product. It is inexpensive and has a lot of uses instead of expensive and harmful products. Here are a few of the things that I use it for. Weed killer in rock beds or between bricks. Use it in my washing machine as a fabric softener and instead of bleach. Works great as a window cleaner. Don’t forget it is a great low cal salad dressing. If your shower head is not spraying water properly remove it and soak it in vinegar for a couple of hours rinse it off and put it back on and it will work just fine. The vinegar has removed all of the sediment buildup. There are lots of websites with all kinds of other hints. Happy saving!

Save on phone costs

May 20th, 2014 Posted in Business, Finance Tips

changeMoney saving idea! How do you get your phone service? If you are hanging on to a traditional land line for what ever reason here is an idea. Try MagicJack. I have used this service for a number of years. My traditional phone service was costing me approximately $80 per month the MagicJack is approximately $12 per year that is not a typo. If you have internet service all you need to do is purchase a MagicJack device either on line or from a retailer such as Best Buy, Radio Shack or other big box retailer. On line the $49.95 purchase price covers your first 6 months of phone service. All your messages will go to your e-mail address. It is very easy to set up, just plug into your USB port and follow the instructions. Your computer does not have to be on for you to make or receive calls. The savings are great.
